In presenting various courses, I often find that students assimilate concepts best when the concepts are presented as part of a Case Study or story. One of my favorite stories combines my love of American History and Marketing. It is the remarkable story of General John Buford. While many individuals had a major impact on the history of the United States, I place General John Buford on a very short list of those who truly changed the course of our history.

Tragically, very few Americans have ever heard of him, even those of us who were American History majors at schools such as Princeton University. I learned about General Buford and his critical role in American History from Pulitzer Prize winning author and Princeton History Professor Emeritus James M. McPherson during a tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield. I was struck by General Buford’s quest for the “Good Ground” and the parallels between that strategy and the foundational Marketing Concept of Competitive Framework – choosing where to compete, on your terms, not competition’s. I hope you find this story educational, informative, and that you will now remember both General John Buford and his quest for the “Good Ground”.
